Profile

Nelson Boychuk, BSc brings nearly 20 years of experience in developing custom software applications. Before becoming a contract developer, Nelson spent 10 fulfilling years as a Systems Analyst in the Oil and Gas industry. Prior to that, he worked as a Programmer Analyst for a large transportation company.

Nelson's philosophy is that every contract must satisfy:

  • Stakeholders - they pay the bills so try to give them good value for their money.
  • Clients - they use the applications so make their experience enjoyable.
  • Developers - they will maintain the application so document it well and make it easy to decipher.
  • Machines - the database and application must both work as efficiently as possible.

Nelson has an eye for detail which enables him to deliver a product that is intuitive, responsive and appealing. He believes that the client's experience with an application must promote acceptance. Poorly written applications can leave those using the system frustrated, intimidated and, before too long, cynical. If there is acceptance from all concerned, then surely success and profitability will follow.

Applications

Oil & Gas #1
We have had the pleasure of working on two seperate projects for a large data provider of oil and gas information. Both projects involved work on a web product that allowed their clients to order and receive digital survey maps via the internet. The map product used for this project was MapGuide (by Autodesk). The rest of the application was written in Cold Fusion, supported by an Oracle database. Additional features of the application include:

  • work order, invoicing and accounts export module
  • client management and licensing system
  • improved reports module (integrated with licensing system)
  • automated creation of thumbnail imaages of digital survey maps
  • popup thumbnail viewer
  • dynamic map layers based on client licensing
Oil & Gas #2
Another client of ours also offers a web service to the oil and gas industry. Specifically, its product allows subscribers a means by which to manage equipment inventory and disposition. We were contracted to write the preventative maintenance and enhanced location modules. This was done in Cold Fusion with an Access database. The preventative maintenance module allows the company to schedule regular maintenance on equipment with automated work orders based on equipment location.
Intranet
Not too long ago we were contracted by a large, international law firm with an office of more than 300 employees. Their intranet required some dynamic functionality beyond HTML. They decided to go with Cold Fusion and a SQL Server database. We were contracted to establish their Cold Fusion environment and write the following applications:
  • Login object that is tied into Novell Netware's security (using CFLDAP).
  • Employee discussion forum complete with administrator's page.
  • Simplified Daily Bulletin editor (Dreamweaver template) and archiving system.
  • Verity search engine for quick retrieval of HTML, Word, Excel and PDF documents.
  • Secure document pages for managers, partners and associates.
  • Additional user tracking in a format recognized by Web Trends.
Real Estate
A local Calgary based company offers a web based, real estate services site written in Cold Fusion and supported by a SQL Server Database. Some aspects of this product that we were involved in:
  • Property entry system - Multitab based forms used by realtors.
  • Data capture and parsing module
  • Miscellaneous reports for agents
e-Business & e-Commerce
For almost a year, we were contracted to work for Calgary company that provides a turn-key, web solution for small businesses. All aspects of a typical website are provided as modules that the customer can select from. By selecting the template (look and feel) and modules, a business can have an eCommerce enabled site up and running in a short period of time. Aspects of this product that we were involved in:
  • Human Resouce Module - job postings, resume entry and search engine.
  • Contact Management Module - personal daytimer, contacts list, notes, meeting invitations
  • Event Calendar Module - post events, sign up for events (including optional payment system), manage number of participants
  • Simplified Document Management System - password controls, storage management
  • eCommerce System - inventory management, virtual store, credit card processing + sales receipt.
  • eParcel System - account request to Canada Post, product detail (dimensions, weight) entry, gather delivery costs associated with goods purchased (XML based web service with Canada Post).
The entire product is developed in Cold Fusion with a SQL Server database.
